Expertise

Matthias Gröger received his doctorate in 2002 on the subject of deep water circulation in the tropical Atlantic on (sub-)orbital time scales. He then worked in international teams at various institutes to develop global and regional earth system models in order to understand past climate changes and to project future changes.

Since 2019 he is placed at the Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, where he is studying how climate change affects extreme conditions in Europe and the Baltic Sea region. To do this, he analyzes patterns in the air pressure and wind systems over the North Atlantic and Europe in order to identify weather conditions promoting risk for certain extremes events such as marine heat waves or heavy rainfall. His research bases primarily on data from the European climate service Copernicus and from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts ECMWF. To find out how these weather conditions and susequent extreme marien events could change in the future, he analyzes climate scenarios from the internationally coordinated Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. He uses the results to derive potential abiotic stress factors on the marine ecosystem and to assess the effectiveness of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change climate goals (Paris, 2015) for the Baltic Sea.
