The strong MBI in autumn 1970 increased the effects of the moderate MBI at the beginning of the year. Oxygen conditions improved in the bottom water in most of the central Baltic basins. In March, May and Oct./Nov. 1970 H₂S was only observed in the western Gotland Basin (NEHRING & FRANCKE, 1971, 1973a).
