A series of measurement campaigns have been carried out between 2002 and 2004 to investigate the generation of turbulence and internal waves from a submenged waste water diffuser in Mamaly Bay, Honolulu, Hawaii. The diffuser generates sea surface signatures which can be identified by satellite imagery. The investigations were focussed on the understanding of the mechanism of surface manifestation of the strong turbulence field and internal waves generated by the diffuser. Different hypothesisses of the generation of the observed sea surface anomalies have been checked on the base of the extended set of hydrographic and microstructure measurements and remote sensing data.
