Our journal club is open to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of recent advances and foundational topics in physical oceanography and climate research. We gather regularly at IOW to discuss recent papers and share insights, helping us deepen our understanding of the field and inspire new research ideas.

About

Our journal club aims to:

  • Explore recent publications in physical oceanography and climate research.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of physical processes and innovative research methods.
  • Encourage discussions on impactful studies.

Meetings are held every month, and all members are encouraged to participate actively—whether by presenting, posing questions, or contributing to discussions.

Getting Started

1. Access Papers: Download the paper for the upcoming session.
2. Read the Current Paper: Review the selected paper before each meeting to prepare for meaningful discussion.

Meeting Structure

Each meeting follows this structured format:

- Introduction (5 min): Overview of the paper and main objectives.
- Presentation (10-15 min): Summary of the study’s context, methods, and findings by the presenter.
- Discussion (30-40 min): Open discussion for sharing insights, critiquing methods, and discussing implications.
- Wrap-Up (5 min): Summarize the key points and any actionable takeaways.

Guidelines for Selecting Papers

When it’s your turn to select a paper, please consider the following guidelines:

- Choose a recent publication, ideally from within the last year.
- Ensure the topic aligns with physical oceanography or climate research.
- Look for papers with value in terms of groundbreaking research, rigorous methodology, novel findings, or broader implications for the field.
- Share a PDF copy of the paper at least one week before the meeting.

2. Participate in discussions: Actively share comments, questions, or ideas during the meetings.
