The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is setting another milestone in the field of marine research: Based on the proven Baltic Sea monitoring, which the IOW already carries out on behalf of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the IOW will establish a harmonized long-term archiving of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples for the German Baltic Sea. This initiative aims to create both a comprehensive database and a physical collection of eDNA samples. The new database will bundle valuable data and information that will be made accessible to scientists, authorities and other interested parties. The physical deposit of eDNA samples will also provide the basis for further research and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity. Another important step in this project is the creation of a fact sheet on the archiving of eDNA samples in German marine areas. This document will provide detailed information and guidelines on sample collection, storage and analysis, and thus support the standardized long-term archiving of eDNA samples. With this initiative, the IOW is making an important contribution to the long-term monitoring and research of the marine environment, which not only strengthens the scientific community, but also contributes to the sustainable use and protection of our oceans.
