The project includes a systematic analysis which indicators for ecosystem services can be derived from ecosystem model simulations (e. g. water transparency, nutrient retention and transformation, anoxia, sediment burial); the definition of an ecosystem service evaluation baseline based on existing model simulation of 1880 (this baseline reflects reference conditions and potential ecosystem services); a comparison of the reference state with a the present state, a future climate change state and a good status of the sea according to MSFD and WFD; the preparation of historic and present ecosystem service maps for the entire German Baltic Sea; the analysis how the concept can be integrated into the MSFD and the integration into existing indicator based coastal sustainability assessments.
