Marine optics programme started at Institute for Marine Research in Warnemünde with work by Hartmut Prandke on light scattering

Laid important foundation on the relation between light scattering intensity and particle concentrations for different water types in the Baltic Sea

Herbert Siegel extended the programme with measurements of spectral reflectance and inherent optical properties in different water types (i.e. dominated by phytoplankton, sediments or CDOM).

Developed methods to determine concentration of water constituents from reflectance measurements, highlighted importance of regional algorithm development.

Identifying suitable spawning substrates for herring in Greifswald Bay

Applied airborne (MKF-6 multispectral camera) and modelled spectral reflectance to map distribution of different sediment types and macrobenthos species in shallow waters
